  • REFLECTION
  • I chose Barbra “Babs” Siperstein because she represents the type often left out of history books: a transgender Jewish woman from New Jersey who changed laws and lives. Her impact spans the entire state, including Somerset County, where schools and communities benefit from the inclusive laws she helped pass. Her legacy shows how one person can challenge systemic bias through courage and action. In a K–6 classroom, her story could be used during lessons on civil rights, Women’s History Month, or Pride Month. Students could write about someone they admire, learn about gender identity, or create posters promoting inclusion. Human-Environment Interaction (HEI) is reflected in how laws and social spaces in NJ have evolved due to Babs’ advocacy, shaping a more welcoming environment for all. Her story is a reminder that New Jersey has real heroes and they don’t all fit the usual mold.
