Jeff Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, NM to Jacklyn Gise and Ted Jorgensen. His mother remarried Miguel Bezos and was adopted by him as well as moving to Houston, TX where they inherited a 25,000-acre ranch.
He moved to Miami, FL, and attended Miami Palmetto Senior High School. He excelled in the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida and received a Silver Knight Award in 1982.
His lemonade stand moment was the creation of the Dream Institute, a 10-day summer education program for kids started by Bezos and his girlfriend, and managed to recruit 6 students at a cost of $600/kid.
In 1982, Bezos entered Princeton University and was elected to the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. He graduated summa cum laude, with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
In 1990, Bezos began working at D. E. Shaw & Co, New York. He quickly became the youngest Vice President there in the company's history but he decided to quit after four years to pursue creating an online bookstore that would later become Amazon.
Working out of his garage with a handful of employees, Bezos began developing the software for the site which he called Amazon.com. After utilizing a sizeable investment from his parent's life savings, Amazon sold its first book in 1995.
