  • this is the garden
  • Cummings "this is the garden; colors come and go" shows that as time passes the vividness and color within life fades into darkness, leading eventually to death. As the poem progresses Cummings uses bleakness to emphasize death. For example, the line "invisible faces hauntingly and slow...the slow deep trees of perpetual sleep" ( lines 8 13) is first used to compare death to the garden. The "invisible faces" represent the ones that have passed. Cummings uses the phrase "perpetual sleep" to say that one's soul is not dead, but in a state of eternal serenity and calmness.
  • Cummings uses eloquent tones throughout the poem. This can be shown through the alliterations found in the poem which help the poem flow more smoothly. "Strong silent greens silently lingering" (line 3) This line helps create a calm tone in the poem.

  • In the lines where they talk about death, Cummings mentions "in other lands where other songs be sung; yet stand they here enraptured" (lines 11 12) The words song be sung and enraptured provide a meaning where death should not be viewed as a bad thing, but rather, should be celebrated. Cummings also uses repetitiveness throughout the poem, by repeating the line "this is the garden", to help show the importance of the garden and its stages.
  • Cummings paints an image of the garden in the reader's head in lines 2 4. "Frail azures fluttering from nights outer wing...Absolute lights like baths of golden snow." These lines help to enhance the reader's image of the garden. It also gives the sight of the azure morning sunrise during nights "outer wing" and the blinding sunlight as it reflects upon the snow.
  • Cummings utilizes symbolism throughout the poem. "and on Death's blade lie many a flower curled" Cummings uses parts of the garden to symbolize other parts of life. For example, in that line the "flower curled" represents those that have passed away.
  • The poem begins with a bright, colorful, and lively "frail azures fluttering...strong silent greens...light like baths of golden snow" (lines 2 4) and as the poem progresses, the feeling diminishes and the visual descriptiveness of the colors seem to fade to gray. Cummings also uses the idea of fading away in his title where he says "colors come and go", showing colors fading away. As time passes the vividness and color within life fades into darkness, leading eventually to death.
