Joel was a prophet of ancient Israel and the son of Pethuel.
He is one of the twelve minor prophets.
The book of Joel takes place in Jerusalem during a time of drought and a swarm of locusts. This destroyed the land.
This crisis had attacked Jerusalem and left no vines or grains for the people of the land and the LORD.
I have to warn the people of Jerusalem!
This was a very devastating time...
"The priests are in mourning, those who minister before the LORD. The fields are ruined, the ground it dried up, and the grain is destoryed" (Joel 1:9-10).
"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten... You will have plenty to eat, until you are full" (Joel 2:25-26).
Joel gets a message that if the people show their loyalty to the land and endure this disaster, the LORD may bless them with what they have lost.
While short, Joel's message is significant for our understanding of repentance, a future of hope, and God's mercy.
Joel hopes the people will repent by changing their actions.
"Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate... Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing" (Joel 2:13-14).
The story of Joel has a lot of key principles that can be applied in todays society. So ask yourself...
