Is this the most appropriate intervention and treatment for my client?

This is where research comes in! Research is how we, as occupational therapists, know that certain treatments and activities can help our clients.

Research Practice Patient Preference
Šmykľavka: 6
Formally, evidenced-based practice is the “conscious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients” (Mirza, 2023).
Šmykľavka: 7
This process ensures that our practice is effective!
We can use research findings to our advantage and have it guide our clinical decision-making (Ottenbacher, 1987).
Šmykľavka: 8
In a way, research makes our lives easier and of course, makes our clients’ care better too!
Šmykľavka: 9
This relationship between research, your practice, and patient care is evidence-based practice.
Now you might be thinking:
Okay, yes! Then how does it connect to our use of occupation?
Šmykľavka: 10
As you may know, occupations are the core of our profession. We use occupations to guide our care and ensure that it is client-centered. The reason why we are able to use occupation is because of research!
Šmykľavka: 11
Research builds a strong case for us that occupational therapy promotes health, well-being and quality of life (Pizzi and Richards, 2017).
We do this by creating effective solutions that facilitate participation in meaningful activities and everyday living (Pizzi and Richards, 2017).
Šmykľavka: 12
Without research and evidence, we would not be able to use occupations in our care.
Šmykľavka: 13
Now you might be thinking:
I see! Are there any other reasons why research matters in occupational therapy?
Šmykľavka: 14
Research does exactly that!
Research helps us establish occupational therapy as a true profession as it creates the foundational background and basis for our practice (Ottenbacher, 1987).
Šmykľavka: 15
Great question!
And explain what you do and make a case for why you are needed?
Šmykľavka: 16
Establishing our profession at high standards and alongside other healthcare professions is done through evidence-based practice. If you want to gain recognition as a true profession, evidence-based practice is the best route!
Šmykľavka: 17
Now you might be thinking:
I understand why research matters now, but how do we implement it?
Šmykľavka: 18
There are plenty of ways to combine research and practice!
Šmykľavka: 19
1. Using the findings from research studies and applying them directly to problems in clinical practice.
Šmykľavka: 20
2. Creating a theory from research and eventually using that theory to guide practice.
Šmykľavka: 21
3. Using the procedural methods of applied research on the implementation and evaluation of our clinical practice.
Šmykľavka: 22
Relying on these methods helps to ensure that there is constant evidence-based practice occurring in our profession.
Šmykľavka: 23
We're relying on you to lean on this process and be the building blocks for the refinement of our profession!
Šmykľavka: 24
This was super helpful!
I feel more confident in my understanding of why research matters in occupational therapy.I can't wait to start implementing it!
