- At home, Anna's mother is ostracized because she had Anna at 16 years old. Some people in town think that Anna and her mother are bad influences.

- At home, Alexia hears her parents yelling at each other all of the time. The yelling stops when her mother leaves her mean and angry father.

- At school, Danielle is the main target of Alexia, who makes her feel horrible about herself. One minute Alexia wants to be friends, and the next minute she is calling her horrible names.
