THE IRANIAN HOSTAGE CRISIS
Ayatollah Khomeini urged supporters to overthrow the Shah. He was exiled.
The Shah received American support and met with President John F Kennedy in 1963.
President Jimmy Carter allowed the Shah to enter the US for cancer treatment.
Khomeini's return to power & criticism of American influence led to angry Islamic students.
The Anti-Shah groups stormed the US Embassy
Embassy employees and soldiers were under attack.
It was a scary scene inside the Embassy as the mob broke in. This happened November 4th, 1979.
Hostages were taken and 52 were taken for 444 days.
The prisoners were held and were treated badly.
GET ME OUT OF HERE!!
The Anti-Shah let one sick person go and all of the African Americans and females. They believed these groups were oppressed by the US government.
President Carter imposed sanctions to try to get the hostages released.
I'll never see my family again.
And the sick one can go aswell.
Alright, all of the African Americans and woman can go!
YAY!
*cough cough*
On April 24th, 1980 President Jimmy Carter ordered a military mission to save the hostages. Eight soldiers died
