- Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1820. After mistreatment and a serious head injury, she made her escape in 1849. She later became one of the most famous conductors of the Underground Railroad.

- The Underground Railroad was the name people called the system of safe-houses on an escape route that fugitive slaves used. The stations were usually homes of abolitionists or freed slaves.
