- In a small village in Latvia during the 1800s, lived the great - great grandfather of Stanley Yelnats IV, named Elya Yelnats.

- Elya was in love with a woman named Myra. However, a pig farmer name Igor had already asked to marry her. So, Elya sought the help of Madame Zeroni to win Myra's hand marriage.

- Madame Zeroni gave Elya a pig. He was to carry it up the mountain to drink from a river for it to grow large. However, after he does, he must do something for her in return.

- After some time, Elya goes through with the plan but Myra doesn't care who she marries. Disgusted with Myra, he leaves, forgetting the promise he made to Madame Zeroni.

- On his way to America, Elya remembers that he was supposed to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain to drink from the water. Because he did not, he fears she will curse him for life.
