Text z Príbehu

  • In 1831 people in Jamaica were still enslaved and were angry about it. They were abused, powerless and most were illiterate, many lived in constant huger. They also wanted to be payed for their labors. The British colonized Jamaica, and although many of the British were disgusted by slavery they kept the people of Jamaica enslaved. The enslaved people had to rebel to gain freedom from the British.
  • The society who was frustrated were the people being enslaved in Jamaica. In the summer of 1831 a specific group of these enslaved people starting talking about "the business". This was the idea of the rebellion, because the enslaved had to rebel to gain freedom from the British. More than 60,000 enslaved people heard about "The business" which ended up failing at first. this soon led to "The Christmas uprising" in December of 1831. This was where people refused to work the day after Christmas unless masters payed the enslaved people for their work. Samuel Sharpe, one of the leaders of the rebellion preached not to hurt anyone. As a result of this only 14 whites were killed while 500 of the rebels were killed. Within 18 months the Slave Emancipation act came to be in 1833, and more than 800,000 people were set free as a result.
  • Samuel Sharpe was an important person in the Jamaican Revolution. He planned and lead a peaceful sit-down strike protest to refuse to work the day after Christmas in 1831 unless masters agreed to pay workers half the wages and free person would get chopping cane.
  • I showed my concerns and encouraged political thoughts about the events in England which affected the slaves in Jamaica through religious meetings
  • People were starting to not support slavery since it was so brutal. Slavery is becoming no longer politically acceptable. During the slave revolt many were killed and executed, 500 enslaved people died, and only 14 whites. Few years later, 1833 The slave Emancipation Act came. This lead to the beginning of the dismantling of the slave system.
  • The revolutionaries who participated in the peaceful protests did achieve their aims eventually. The protest/ start of the revolution started in 1831, and just a few years later 1838 slavery is abolished. Most of the British public was already disgusted with slavery, so one the rebellions started, 18 months after the first fire slavery would be abolished.
