  • By: Zahabia Kanchwala
  • Projection
  • To project feelings onto someone else is also a defense mechanism.
  • This is an unconscious mechanism in which a person's ego keeps threatening thoughts from becoming conscious. It can include the exclusion of distressing memories or feelings from the conscious mind.
  • Displacement
  • Denial is a defense mechanism in which a person refuses to accept the reality of the situation, thus blocking external events from awareness and repeatedly deny the event.
  • Regression
  • Projection is the process of displacing one's feelings onto another person or thing that you don't like about yourself. A common example would be that someone cheats on their partner because they suspect their partner is cheating on them.
  • This defense mechanism occurs when a person redirects a negative emotion from its original source to a weaker, less threatening recipient.
  • Displacement is also a defense mechanism.
  • Repression is holding back feelings such as the feeling to cry. One might even socially repress or restrain themselves due to denial or due to being overpowered by an emotion.
  • One of the human defense mechanisms is regression.
