  • Women
  • Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan on December 7, 1941. The attack led to the United States joining World War II. Tensions with Japanese Americans rose in the U.S.
  • African Americans
  • When Pearl Harbor was attacked there were about 150,000 Japanese Americans on the Hawaiian Islands. Some Americans thought that they possibly helped plan the attack. The war department recommended Japanese Americans evacuate Hawaii but the governor of Hawaii, businesses, and the press urged people to stay calm. However, in 1942 Roosevelt declared large military zones to exclude residents that were believed to be threats. They used this as an excuse to start evacuating and more than 100,000 Japanese Americans were sent to camps with poor living conditions
  • Jewish Americans
  • Concentration Camp
  • With the number of men headed to war, women took many of the jobs that men used to do. Even though women had more job opportunities, their pay did not increase as much as men and they faced discrimination on the job. Shortly after the war began they realized that women could do the clerical and secretarial work that was done by male soldiers. After they opened up that for women there were more men for combat and more women joining the military.
  • Mexican Americans
  • There was segregation of African Americans in the military. They ate and slept in separate places apart from the other troops. Early in the war the marines and army air corps refused to accept African Americans. Eventually, black leaders pressured the government and black soldiers were given great opportunities. African Americans were also fighting racism at home. Many groups working to prevent racism did very well during the war.
  • Germany started discriminating against Jews. Eventually, they started arresting and even killing Jews. They wanted to flee but the National Origins Act limited the amount allowed to immigrate. Jewish Americans were trying to convince the United States to help Jews in Europe but Roosevelt didn't do anything until 1944. Some Jewish Americans in the army faced discrimination but some did not get discriminated against.
  • Mexicans faced discrimination and some wondered why they fought for America in the war when they were not treated equally. About 500,000 Mexican Americans fought in the war and they thought that it might prove their loyalty. Many Mexican Americans started wearing zoot suits. Many white people started viewing Mexican Americans that dressed like this as lawless. In June 1943 groups of sailors and marines went through the streets attacking anyone wearing zoot suits. The LA Police did not do much to stop them and arrested the victims instead.
