Storyboard Text

  • Ben Gurion's declaration of the State of Israel in May 1948 increases Arab hostility towards Jews. Arab nations outraged. The King of Jordan announces "The only way left for us is war"
  • Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria attack the newly founded state of Israel on 15th May 1948. Israel were outnumbered 80 to 1, with no air force or artillery. Using Haganah and captured and smuggle weapons, the Israelis captured large quantities of land
  • Despite truces in June - July 1948 negotiated by the Un, fighting continued. In October, the Israelis had all of Gailee, pushed the Egyptians to Sinai desert and Palestinian Arabs to the Gaza Strip. Cease fire proposed by the UN was signed summer 1949.
  • The war united Israel, revealing their intention of being a state. Russia and the US accepted the state of Israel within Palestine. The USA provided financial aid to Israel to prevent the spread of Soviet Communism.
  • The war also revealed Israels military strength. They now had 78% of Palestine, which was more than they were originally given in the UN Partition Plan. The war ended in ceasefire, so Israel trained everyone in the army to prepare them for future attacks.
  • The war killed 6,000 Jews and forced 800,000 Arabs to leave Israel, causing refugee problems for neighbouring Arab countries, leading to the formation of Fedayeen (Freedom Fighters). Israel's Law of Return gave every Jew the right to return to Israel, further increasing tension between Israel and Palestine.
