This is Dred Scott. He is a slave. He works for Dr. John Emerson.
I don't like being a slave.
Although Scott was a slave, Dr. Emerson gave him a nice life. He had a family, and went places with the Dr., such as Wisconsin Territory, which is free territory.
This isn't that bad.
However, when Dr. Emerson passed away, Dred Scott and his family were left to Emerson's wife, Eliza Irene Sanford. Unfortunately, she was not as nice as her husband. This made Scott angry, so he decided to take his case to court.
This is unfair. I want to take my case to court and become a free man.
Dred Scott believed that since he and his family had been to free territories, they were allowed to become free citizens.
I want to be FREE!
Unfortunately, judge Rodger B. Taney did not agree. His verdict was that slaves were property, not citizens, and that Dred Scott and his family had to remain slaves. This sent Northerners into an uproar.
