The USS Maine was a ship moved to the Havana harbor. The ship went up in flames killing 250 American people!! The US blames the Spanish.
Treaty of Paris
President McKinley hesitates for war, and peace remains.
Territory Gained by the US
President McKinley demanded these things from Spain. Money for the USS Maine, to end camps, a truce with Cuba, and Cuban independence were expected except for Cuban independence.
TRUCE WITH CUBA
The US signs with Spain. Spain recognizes Cuban independence. This took place Dec. 1898
In return for 20 million dollars, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. These are now US territories.
