  • The Cubans attracted the American's interest by burning sugar cane. The Cubans used yellow journalism to get the US to come help them.
  • US demands to Spanish
  • NO MORE CAMPS
  • The USS Maine was a ship moved to the Havana harbor. The ship went up in flames killing 250 American people!! The US blames the Spanish.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • CUBAN INDEPENDENCE
  • President McKinley hesitates for war, and peace remains.
  • Territory Gained by the US
  • President McKinley demanded these things from Spain. Money for the USS Maine, to end camps, a truce with Cuba, and Cuban independence were expected except for Cuban independence.

  • The US signs with Spain. Spain recognizes Cuban independence. This took place Dec. 1898
  • In return for 20 million dollars, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. These are now US territories.
