There was once a fine weaver named Arachne. People loved her weaving, but after years of people comparing her weaving to the goddess Athena, she began to get annoyed. She started telling people that she was better than Athena.
"No! Athena is the best weaver! She created weaving!"
"I am the best weaver in the world! And I am better than Athena!"
Soon after, word reached Athena of what Arachne had been saying. She decided to go to earth disguised as an old woman to see what Arachne had to say about her weaving for herself.
"I have to do something about that."
"There is a weaver named Arachne who tells everyone that she is a better weaver than you. "
While under disguise, she visited Arachne. She complimented her weaving, and compared her to Athena. Of course Arachne become very mad. Once again she said she was better.
"Wow! Your weaving is beautiful, but I have to say Athena's weaving is still the best in the world, of course."
"I am sick of hearing about Athena! I say that I am the best weaver in the world!"
As soon as Athena heard what Arachne had to say, she transformed into her normal body. Arachne had long awaited this moment, although she was afraid of what the goddess might do to her, she challenged her to see who was better.
"I meant what I said. Here are two wooden looms. You use one, and I will use the other. We will see who is best and settle this once and for all."
Arachne thought her own weaving was beautiful; but when she turned and saw Athena's, she compared them, and finally realized she wasn't even close to Athena's talents. She felt terrible. She started to run away in guilt.
"Do you see how beautiful mine is? Oh! But your's is superior to mine. I will never even come close, no matter how hard I try! I shall never weave again!"
Athena followed quickly behind her. She reached out and touched Arachne's shoulder. She immediately started to shrink. Her two legs grew into eight and her body became the color of her hair. She turned into what we call today Arachnids. She became the first spider on earth.
"Everyone is born with a special gift or talent. All you have to do is figure out what it is. I will not let you waste your precious skill. You shall weave again!"
