You see. They would sell us for a sack of potatoes!
In chapter 13 Yanek arrives in the saltmines. The guards have a talk with the prisoners about escaping. They say if you escape that you will survive off of salt only. No one will be able to find you. He see's all kinds of cool things. Like statues. Yaneks job was to carry rocks to one side and then do it all over again. While he was working a gaurd found another gaurd dead. His wounds were stuffed with salt insituating the pain he caused in the ghetto.
Yanek has been working for a while now. He has had pointless jobs. Him and other prisoners are forced to carry heavy rocks to one side and then when they finish they have to put it back to the other side. Prisoners would get beaten if they were going fast enough or if they didn't carry a heavy rock.
Yanek was still working but then him and other prisoners were moved into a cargo train. They were on the move for a while. A man ended up dying on him. Same with other passangers from being over worked or not being fed enough. He then saw other cargo's. One man yelled and asked where they are headed. Once Yanek told him where he was headed Yanek asked the same thing. He says "BIRKENAU". When Yanek asked is that a working camp the man looked at him and laughed. He says thats not a place wher you work its a place where you die.
