  • THE VAGINA
  • who are you guys? i don't remember anything but i know i need to find the key to return home .
  • the only way out is through the maze and its very dangerous. nobody has ever survived through the night. i'm surprised you've made it this far.
  • the maze runner
  • Abigail Russell
  •                THE CERVIX
  • come on. we have to find a way out of the maze before dark. there's not time to waste.
  • THE UTERUS
  • what are these things?
  • they're grievers. try not to die.
  • APPROXIMATELY 250 MILLION SPERM ENTER THE VAGINA, MOST DIE (99%) WITHIN 30 MINUTES BECAUSE OF DEADLY ACIDS THAT PROTECT THE VAGINA FROM PATHOGENS.
  • THE FALLOPIAN TUBE
  • we beat the grievers but it took away a lot of our energy. we have to make sure we eat and stay hydrated if we are going to make it.
  • ONLY 60,000 SPERM REMAIN. THE SPERM MUST NAVIGATE THROUGH THE CERVIX LOCATED ON THE FAR END OF THE VAGINA. THE CERVIX IS USUALLY PLUGGED SHUT WITH MUCUS, BUT DURING OVULATION ESTROGEN FLOWS FROM THE OVARY TO THE UTERUS WHICH SOFTENS THE MUCUS IN THE CERVIX, LEAVING IT WATERY SO THE SPERM CAN GET THROUGH. SPERM SWIM IN SINGLE FILE. MOST DIE BECAUSE THEY GET LOST AND TAKE THE WRONG PASSAGEWAY.
  • FERTILIZATION IN FALLOPIAN TUBE
  • i'm with Teresa. lets get out of here.
  • APPROXIMATELY 3,000 SPERM REMAIN AND MUST NAVIGATE THROUGHOUT THE UTERUS TO FIND THE FALLOPIAN TUBE. MUSCULAR CONTRACTIONS HELP GUILD SPERM TO THE RIGHT FALLOPIAN TUBE. SPERM ARE THEN ATTACKED BY A WHITE BLOOD CELL ARMY LAUNCHED BY THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. THE REMAINING SPERM SEARCH FOR THE DOORWAY TO THE FALLOPIAN TUBE.
  • Implantation
  • there's a helicopter! we are safe now..
  • approximately 10-30 sperm remain. Once inside, sperm are safe from the white blood cells. Sperm are provided with nourishment from the fallopian tube so they can stay alive for several hours and sometimes even days.
  • The remaining sperm must attempt to find the egg at the upper end of the fallopian tube. The egg releases chemicals that sperm can sense and they begin to move more quickly. The egg is the largest cell in the human body. Timing is key when it comes to fertilization.  When the sperm make contact with the outer coat the enzymes on its head explode and allows the sperm to penetrate the outer coat of the egg. Once inside a genetic code is giving to determine the gender.
  • we found the key! lets get out of this hell hole.
  • The implantation process begins. The Zygote (union of sperm and egg) travels back down the fallopian tube towards the uterus. cells then begin dividing.  5 days later, the embryo breaks out of the protective shell and implants on the wall of the uterus and begins growing.
  • lets go!
