in 1786 delegates met from five different states so they could discuss making national trade laws, they believed it would help the economy. Making these changes required amending the articles of confederation.

The 55 delegates were made up of doctors, lawyers, merchants and planters. they were considered an impressive group, America's most famous men were at the convention too. some delegates couldn't go and neither could native americans, african americans or women.

many delegates arrived to the constitutional convention without any knowledge of what to expect. some people thought they would create a new plan for the government. in 1776 many americans believed the government was the threat, but by 1787 many realized they needed a government.

first thing they did was elect a president for the convention. George Washington was elected. The delegates had a meeting explained that they didn't want to be pressured by politics and they wanted to be able to consider all ideas. they ended up speaking in secret.
On May, 29 the delegates began creating the new national government. Edmund Randolph presented a new national government called the Virginia Plan. This form of government would have Three branches
William Patterson explained another way of government called the New Jersey Plan. They argued over what plan to choose so they selected a committee to help and they came up with the great compromise. The great compromise plan was passed on July 16, 1787.
