My God, How did this happen. It was only the other night everything was fine and the next thing I know I'm drowning... There's Beatty dead, and there's Millie gone, the house all burnt, my job gone, myself on the run, and I planted a book in a fireman's house on the way.
You'd better head for the river if you can, follow along it, and if you can hit the old railroad lines going out into the country, follow them. They say there are lots of Harvard degrees on the tracks between here and LA. Hold up with them, then get in touch with me in St. Louis with a retired printer.
Beatty let Montag know that he was under arrest, but rather than be taken; Montag used the flamethrower to kill Beatty and the Mechanical Hound. He got away, but the hound's venom was in his leg, making him limp. He grabbed the books from his backyard and continued running, while the police put out an alert for his arrest.
Montag found himself running to Faber's home. Before knocking, he placed a few books in a nearby fireman's home as a diversion. Once he arrives, he informs the professor of what has just happened.
See, his face is out of focus. Poor guy just wanted to go for a walk and is now captured and claimed a criminal.
Together, they come up with a plan. Montag will go down to the river and meet with other intellectuals and Faber will take transport to St. Louis and meet someone who will print more books. Before they leave, Faber gives Montag liquor and a change of clothes.
Montag struggles to reach the river as he carries the items and runs with a limp leg. Just seconds before everybody looked outside, on command, he finally made it to the river. There, he changed his clothes and poured the alcohol all over his body. Thus resulting in the hound losing the scent and Montag getting away.
Montag meets other men on the run. They all live in the country and memorize books until citizens need them in the far future. They show Montag that the helicopters and hound ran to the other side of the city and captured a different man in order to have good ratings.
Shortly after the "capture of Montag," the city was bombed and burned to the ground. All the men must continue to move now and search for those in need of guidance.
