The theme of the story, The Monsters ar due on Maple Street, by Rod Sterling is to try to stay calm. To try to stay calm and keep a clear head in intense circumstances like the one that we see in the story. Their down fall was that everyone was jumping to conclustions, getting ahead of themselves, and panicking over a few lights going off.
The Beggining of it All
What in the world is that?
Darn thing won't work.
Operator, for the last time, are you there?
HAHA! You really believe this kid?
Everything suddenly stops working after a comet of sorts flys over a small neiborhood called Maple Street leaving everyone confused at first.
In the mist of all of the confustion everyone is trying to figure out what is going on. Since nothing is working on there street including their cars and phones, a man named Pete gose to check the nearest neighborhood to see if they're expirencing issues too.
Die Monsters! Die!
A boy named Tommy says that the reason nothing is working is because aliens/monsters that came from the comet turned everything off so they couldn't leave. And that one of the neighbors was one of them, planting that seed of suspision in some minds.
I told you it was that simple
People start throwing accusations left and right about who could possiby be the monsters beacause "they've been acting strange." People are being wrongly accused for doing things like working on a ham radio.
I saw you looking up at the sky funny the other morning!
He must be the monster!
The accusations get so crazy that they even start thinking it's Tommy the little kid. Everyone is so paranoid that when a mysterious figure starts walking towards them someone shoots it. But it turned out to just be Pete coming back.
When everyone is circling around Pete in a panic, two figures apear in the background who discuss how easy it is to turn the "simple humans" against eachother. They talk about it like it's a procedure that they do to many places just like Maple Street.
