The men of Jamestown had come from England and hoped to find gold and silver in Virginia. After the winter on 1609-1610 the settlers finally grew cash crops. In 1612 a man named John Rolfe began to grow a new kind of tobacco. Soon that became a big part of the Jamestown economy and that was the way most settlers became wealthy.
Jamestown was located by the coast of what is now Virginia. The colony was placed 60 miles up the James River. They built Jamestown on a peninsula in a swampy area. There was lots mosquitoes and not much pure drinking water.
In the year of 1619, the House of Burgesses was created. This would be the government for the colony. The people of Jamestown could now elect representatives to make laws for the colony. This type of government came to be known as "representative government".
