In August 1590, John White returned to Roanoke three years after the war with Spain, and he had plenty of useful supplies with him. But when he arrived, nothing was there except for empty houses, trees, and wood. Everyone was so confused and puzzled of where they disappeared.
It was hard to survive in Jamestown for many of the settlers. They had a Captain, named John Smith. He was very good at making money and trading but he was mean and strict and bossed everyone around. Many of the settlers died of Malaria and other diseases. They had also an extremely hard time during the "Starving Period". No one ate a thing and they starved to death.
Around 100 English separatists set sail for the New World aboard the Mayflower. When they arrived in December half of the original settlers had died during that first grueling winter. Soon after they arrived, the Pilgrims were introduced to a helpful man named Squanto, who became a member of the colony. In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims shared a harvested feast with the Pokanokets, they ate enough so they weren't starving. Today it is known as Thanksgiving
