Dinnertime in Monsieur and Madame Loisel's worn down house...
Aha! Scotch broth! What could be better?
I'm back and I have something for you!! The Minister of Education and Madame Raponneau invites you to a party at the Ministry on the evening of Monday, January the 18th.
What to do want me to do with this?? What do you suppose I am to wear at such an affair???
Uhh... the dress you go to the theater with looks very nice to me...
Why? Just why? Why is it like this? Why did I, a beautiful, elegant, and charming lady called Mathilde Loisel, let myself be married off to a little clerk in the Ministry of Education? I want wealth, luxury, and men who are famous and sought after. I want to look exquisite and attractive. I want clothes and jewels. I want all the sights a rich person would have!
As the party drew near...
I still look poor! I need jewels!
Just go ask Madame Forestier to lend you some.
The day of the party.
See, look how I endlessly suffer. What is this dinner!? I expect delicate meals served in marvelous dishes, gorgeous tapestries, and murmured gallantries!!!!
Wow. She's so beatiful. I want to be introduced to her! I want to waltz with her!
I don't want to look poor there. My husband should clearly should give the invitation to someone else. But surprisingly, he gave me 400 francs to buy a dress. I hope I look admiring with it.
After the party, at 4:00 A.M., Monsieur Loisel has come to pick up her wife from the party.
I don't want to wait though...
Wait a litte. You'll catch a cold in the open.
Madame Forestier allowed me to choose some jewellery from a large box. I wanted to borrow an exquisite diamond necklace, and Madame Forestier granted me permission to do so. I was so happy!
That day was a success. It was the happiest day of my life! I looked elegant, and I danced delightfully. The Minister even noticed me!
I don't want everyone else to know how poor I actually am. I have to hurry, but it's so cold! After a long time of searching, we finally found a carriage which brought us to our door in the Rue des Martyrs. We're finally home after a long, wonderful day...
