Charley tells his mom that he is going to be part of the civil war. His mom reluctantly agrees.

Charley trades with a southern farmer. He gives the farmer some coffee beans and Charley will get tobacco in return.
Charley goes into the battle with Nelson. Nelson is new to battle just like charley was when he first joined the army.
Nelson gets a belly-wound during his first battle. Charley reloads his gun and goes back to fight just as nelson asked him to
oh no!
After the war, Charley is haunted by what he experienced. He is also somewhat hardened by the experience. During the war he got what was known as "A Soldier's heart."
