Storyboard Text

  • England: Throne Room
  • King of England
  • We have new rules. You must ship goods using English boats, certain products can only be exported to England, all imports must pass through English ports, and we are taxing all of the exported goods.
  • Parliament talked about how with mercantilism our country should be making a lot of money off of the Colonies. They are prospering and we are not. How can I fix this?
  • England: Meeting with the Parliament
  • Speaking to Parliament: How can we increase our profits from the colonies?
  • Member 1: Only allow them to ship goods on ships that are made in England or the colonies. Member 2: Only allow them to sell certain products to England or the colonies. Member 3: All imports to the colony much pass through ports in England before being delivered. Member 4: We can tax all of their shipments.
  • Port in the Colonies
  • Since when?
  • The King can't do this!! We've been living the same way with none of these rules for decades! We cannot live with these rules, it changes how everything works. Is there any way we can get around these rules?
  • Ship Captain
  • Maybe we can hide some goods under the deck in the secret compartment so that it won't be found and we can get around the taxes. Also, the King is thousands of miles away, he won't know whether we are sailing to his ports before we deliver the shipments.
  • A ship on a delivery route
  • Captain, what can we do to get around these new rules called the Navigation Acts?
