- 3-Oh, you’d be amazing Sherise, you should totally do it!
- 2-Ha ha, no way, you could enter that, you’re a girl, stick to knitting, sewing and weaving (Capel, 2021).
- 1-Hey look guys there’s a STEAM Maker contest happening next month! I really want to register!

- What? Boys aged 10-13 only? This is outrageous and totally sexist!
- Since I took that girls only makerspace summercamp, I identify myself as a “maker” (Capel, 2021)
- Back at School
- Hey, Ms. Hanson! May I speak with you for a moment, please?
- Sure, Sherise, what can I help you with?
- Sherise notices a poster in the hallway. A rude student makes a sexist comment. But Sherise's friends support her.
- Sherise explains the contest to Ms. Hanson
- Well, I really wanted to register for the STEAM Maker Contest and it said that only boys can register.I really know myself as a maker and I’m capable that’s part of why I keep wanting to learn more (Castek, 2019).
- Sherise believes in herself and identifies as a maker! To only find out that as she researches the contest, it's exclusive to boys.
- After School in Ms. Hanson's Office
- Hi there I am calling in regards to the STEAM Contest and would like to speak with the main organizers, please?
- Sherise runs into her teacher, Ms. Hanson.

- Wait a minute, excluding girls?Hmm, this isn’t inclusive at all. Well, good thing I just attended a workshop on the principles for the design of STEAM spaces.I am going to contact the company and give some of my suggestions.
- Ms. Hanson calls the organizers of the STEAM Contest on speaker phone
- Yes, hi I’m George the organizer. How may I help you?
- George tries to explain the reasons for only having boys enter the STEAM contest.
- Yes, it is boys only.We want to have the most creative and elaborate presentations in the contest as it will be broadcasted for National TV and it needs to be entertaining and not boring.Boys are exceptional in the areas of science and tinkering so we are opening it to them.
