  • Chapter 1The story starts with Karana's memory when the Aluet ship came to Ghalas-at. Karana and her brother called Ramo saw the Aluets approaching Ghlas-at. Some Russians landed on the shore. They wanted to hunt otter. Captain Orlov said that he came in peace and wished to parley. The chief of the island called Chief Chowig, also known as Karana's and Ramo's father showed up and introduced himself by his real name. Krana was surprised that her father gave his real name to a stranger. Everyone in Karana's tribe has two names, the real one which was the secret and was sldom used, and one which was common, for if people use your secret name it becomes worn out and loses its magic. Karana's name for every day use is Won-a-pa-lei, meaning "the Girl with the Long Black Hair." There is disagreement between Orlov and Chowig regarding a previous hunting trip that caused problems at Ghalas-at. Chief Chowig and Captain Orlov finally agree that they will split the spoils equally. Karana has been listening to their conversation from a spot on a cliff above the beach. Now, however, a rock falls from the cliff, ad Karana, startled, runs back to the village before she can hear any more.

  • Chapter 2Some Russian hunters from the Aleutian Islands have arrived at the island to hunt sea otter. The chief of the tribe on the island, Karana's father, has agreed to allow the men to stay on the island . The Aleuts have come to take otter and must give islander share in many goods which they have and they can use. Chapter two of Island of the Blue Dolphins offers a description of the island and begins to explore the interactions between the islanders, under the direction of Chief Chowig, and the Aleuts, who are led by Captain Orlov. Chief Chowig warns the islanders to be careful of the Aleuts. He sees the benefit in offering them hospitality in exchange for goods, but is cautious of becoming too friendly because of a past experience with men from the same tribe. The villagers listened to Chief Chowig and did not visit the aleut camp, but they did watch them closely from the cliffs. He says they're "not people who understand friendship". Karana's brother, Ramo, is struck by the way Captain Orlov combs his beard. Ulape, Karana's sister, swears there is a girl in the camp, but no one believes her. Most likely, the Aleuts watched the villagers as well. Two of the Aleut men ask the Chief for two fish, but he says no way. The Russian men threaten to tell Captain Orlov about the Chief's refusal. The narrator hints that bad things will come of this.

  • Chapter 5Kimki, one of the village elders, is elected to be the new Chief. He's old, but was a good man and a good hunter in his youth. Because there are so few men in the village, the women take over many of the men's jobs. They have to go out and catch birds and fish. Ulape and Karana's job is to gather abalones. Ramo is given the job of protecting the abalones from the seagulls and the pack of wild dogs that now wanders around the island. In the spring, Kimki tells the tribe he's going on a journey to the east – to a country which he had been to when he was a boy. Kimki will go alone but promises would return. He leaves by canoe filled with water and supplies. The villager wonder if kimki will come back or never.
