In October 1492, italian explorer for Spain, Christopher Columbus was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia. He landed in San Salvador.
1st European to map the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico (Texas Coastline). Alonzo Alvares de Pineda also mapped Jamaica to Cabo Rojo, Mexico in 1519.
Hernan Cortes was sent to present day Mexico by the governor of Cuba in 1519.The Aztecs viewed Cortes and his men as gods because of their horses, firearms, and metal armors. With the help of Aztecs enemies, the Spanish were able to overthrow the Aztecs. The Aztecs also possessed wealth in gold and silver.This was sent back to Spain and mad Spain very rich.
In 1526, Cabeza de Vaca ship wrecked on Galveston Bay,taken in by the Karankawas. He lived as a Medicine man and traveled from Texas from tribe to tribe. He told stories of the 7 cities of gold.
In 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Cornado went in search of Cibola. He found the Pueblo village, he split his group in half. Half traveled west and found the Grand Canyon and the Pacific Ocen.He claimed this land for Spain.
In 1684,La Salle established Fort St. Louis, They ran out of supplies and La Salle was murdered by one of the few remaining people (soldier) on there way back to Canada. The expedition was a failure but it gave France a claim to Texas.
