  • The battle of Appomattox on April 9th, 1865 ended the four year Civil War.
  • Freed Slaves 
  • Once the Civil War was over, there were many ideas addressed to bring The South back into The Union.
  • Southern Reaction to Freed Slaves
  • Southern soldiers were surprised and saddened when coming back home because they saw a low morale and their towns were destroyed.
  • Black Codes
  • On the other hand, newly freed slaves were begging to push for freedom thanks to Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Many southerners were not used to seeing slaves free and being able to vote.
  • Southerners created "black codes" to restrict as many rights for African Americans as possible.
  • No Alcohol!
  • No Firearms!
