  • Once World War II began, people in many countries stepped up to volunteer.
  • Some chose to be "spotters," who would watch out for enemy planes or submarines along the coastlines
  • Others gave blood for those in need, and for troops overseas.
  • Gasoline and food were rationed, to provide more of both for the war effortPeople of all ages also collected scrap metal and rubber that could be recycled and used to build planes, ships, tanks, etc. for the war
  • The war was fought at home in numerous countries around the world, and those volunteer efforts helped the Allies to eventually win World War II.
  • Millions of women around the world began working in traditional l "male" jobs as men became soldiers overseas, working in factories and construction, among other things.
