  • Empress Wu came from a somewhat wealthy aristocratic family.
  • Here is the throne, mother.
  • At 14, Wu served as an imperial concubine at the imperial palace. Eventually, she had an affair with the emperor's son, who was next in line for the throne.
  • Women shouldn't rule!
  • This is against the heavens!
  • She had her first son in 652 AD. She strangled her newly born daughter to frame her rival, Empress Wang.
  • She redefined many aspects of China's society and bureaucracy.
  • Wu ruled ambitiously and with an "iron fist"
  • Wu was the first female ruler.
  • In 690 AD, Wu's son, Li Dan gave the throne to his mother (most likely under her influence).
  • Wu received much backlash for not being a male ruler.
