  • A Republican from Illinois, Lincoln led the Union during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States defeating Jefferson Davis in the election. He opposed the expansion of slavery.
  • North Had More Rails
  • As commanding general, Ulysses S. Grant led the Union Armies to victory over the Confederacy in the American Civil War.  His army barely beat Robert E. Lee's.
  •  Union Produced Self-Manufactured Products
  • In the Anaconda Plan, the union planned to cut off the Confederation's connections with the outside world and drain them of resources.
  • North Had ~22 Million people
  • The main portion of railways were in the North. With 72% of the nation's tracks, it was much easier for the union to transport goods, people, guns, and supplies.
  • The union, being the industrialized part of the country, could be self-reliant in manufacturing. This means they did not have to buy supplies from other countries.
  • The north had 22 million people which is about double the south's populaiton.
