  • Shays' Rebellion, January 1787
  • Constitutional Convention, May-September 1787
  • The Great Compromise, May-September 1787
  • Daniel Shays had fought in the Revolutionary War. He had not gotten paid for being a soldier. Under the Articles of Confederation, the government was too weak to pay him and others.
  • Constitution signed, September 17, 1787
  • After Shays' Rebellion, delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss the problems with the Articles of Confederation.
  • 9 of 13 states ratify the Constitution, 1791
  • The delegates at the Constitutional Convention discussed how the states would be represented in the new Constitution. There would be a Senate and a House of Representatives.
  • Bill of Rights, 1791
  • The delegates came to philadelphia  to sign the constitution but it still needed to be ratified.
  • The states finally ratified or approved the constitution .
  • Bill of rights was based on the Virginia declaration of rights and the Virginia statute for religious freedom.
