  • Mansa Musa was a African king who owned the Mali empire and is known modern day for being one of the wealthiest men in the world.

  • Mansa Musa's most famous trip was during the Hajj which is a Arab tradition to visit Mecca which on his way he visited Cairo

  • During his trip to Cairo he famously brought thousands of camels and servants carrying gold and jewelry
  • Modern legacy
  • The story goes once he arrived to Cairo he gave so much money away to the poor, middle class, and those who held political office that he deflated the value of gold in the city and area
  • Mansa Musa's wealth was so great when Europeans began to make a world map of the time they were sure to include him holding a gold nugget on top of a gold throne showing his wealth for the time as he literally managed to put himself on the map.
  • Mansa Musa today has a legacy of both great wealth but also a legacy of showing how Africa was at some points greater the Europe and very wealthy
