"' White soldiers and black soldiers moved into the same barracks.... That was historic.... And there was not one incident of racism "'(98).
SIGNPOSTS: Numbers and Stats
"More than 12,000 paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne were about to march down New York City's Fifth Avenue for a victory parade celebrating the end of World War ||"(95).
MINDSET: Growth Mindset
"' Anybody can join the Triple Nickles now as long as they're Airborne"'(108)
The author cited this person because they knew what happened. And now we know that racism is gone in the army.
WORD GAP: Effectuate
"This policy shall be put into effect as rapidly as possible and having due regard to the time required to effectuate any necessary changes without impairing efficiency or morale"(101).
The author wanted to show how many paratroopers went to the Victory Parade.
SUMMARY: The Most Important Thing
1.) Even after white soldiers made fun of them, they didn't care what they said about them. 2.) They succeeded when no one thought they would. 3.) Once they finally finished WW|| they were accepted as equals in the army.
This is a growth mindset because before they only had the black soldiers be the Triple Nickles, but now anyone can, they are putting segregation behind them. If the white soldiers and black soldiers didn't join forces, then there would be so much discrimination today.
BOOK CLUB QUSTIONS
How many soldiers became Triple Nickles?
Definition: Put into power or operation. Not a technical term.
In the book, Courage Has No Color, the most important thing is that at the end of the book segregation is finally gone in the Army. Any person, of any color, can join the Army.
If the soldiers were never given a chance to help save the country, would there still be segregation between the white and black people?
