The Spanish began to develop a desire to explore and conquer new lands, and routes to the east. In 1492, Queen Isabella sponsors Christopher Columbus to sail west across the Atlantic Ocean.
"I can't wait until we reach land and I can spread the Spanish culture and religion!"
Columbus landed in the Caribbean and claimed it for Spain. All resources and goods from anywhere within the empire, or conquered were considered the rightful property of Spain. They would also send missionaries to these new lands to teach/ convert people to Roman Catholicism. Ethnocentrism led the Spanish to believe their culture and religion were superior and used these attitudes validate their poor treatment of the people they conquered.
