We should have a unicameral legislature with equal representation per state!
Why not a combination of both???
No! We should have a bicameral legislature with both branches represented by population size!
Slaves should not count when calculating population!
Commerce Slave Trade Compromise
The federal government should be able to tax!
But don't take away our slaves!
At the Constitutional convention, the Connecticut Compromise created a bicameral legislature in which the House is determined by states' population size and the Senate would be equal across all states.
In order to solve the issues of how slaves should count in regards to representation in legislature as well as for tax purposes, they decided that slaves would count as 3/5's of a person.
The federal government could not ban the slave trade until 1808, but they could still tax slaves coming into the United States.
