  • The two troops of Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate), met at a small town in Virginia called Appomatox Courthouse.
  • Gen. Robert E. Lee finally agreed to a surrender on April 9th, 1865 in a small home in Appomattox Courthouse. Gen. Grant (Union) wrote out the details of the surrender that stated the Confederate soldiers could keep their weapons but may not arm them again. He allowed them to travel home safely and return to their homes.
  • The Union troop gave the Confederate troops food for their travel home and they parted peacefully. Soon, the news that the war was over became the headline of all newspapers.
