  • Frederick Douglass was a slave and most slaves couldn’t read, but Douglass changed that when he moved to Baltimore at the age of seven or eight. Mr. and Mrs. Auld were his new master and mistress, yet Mrs. Auld didn’t treat Douglass like a slave she saw him as a person. One day she asked douglass if he could read and he said no so she taught him to read.
  • Mrs. Auld taught him ABC and then he was able to read three letter words. One day while they were reading together and Mr. Auld walks in and starts yelling at her about how if you teach a slave then the slave wouldn’t be reliable if they learned to read. That night Douglass wasn’t able to sleep he figured that if he learned to read that he would find a way to be free, so he decides that no matter what he will learn to read he is determined. On the next morning apparently Mrs. Auld decided to change the way she does things too. When she saw Douglass instead of asking him politely to chop the wood she yelled at him and whenever she sees him with a book she snatches it away form him.
