Storyboard Text

  • I was born a slave on a plantation. My mom died when I was young. When I was 15 I switched owners to a man named Mr. Covey. The reason why I had to go to Covey is because I wanted to be free and he was supposed to change how I felt about that; that’s why he was called the “slave breaker”. I was determined to do two things in free and read!!
  • Freedom...freedom is all I could think about. One day when I was passed out, Covey was beating me while I was down, so I decided to run away.   While in the woods, I met Sandy, another slave, and he gave me a root that was special.  He said as long as I had this root, I would not get whipped by a white man.
  • When I went back to Covey’s plantation, the root was fully tested. I was in the barn combing and brushing the horses, and on my way out, Mr.Covey caught me by my legs. I was able to get out of the ropes when Covey was on the ground. That’s when I decided to fight back.
  • During the fight I grabbed covey by the throat. “LEt go of me!” I yelled. “Make me you dumb slave!”, Covey replied. When we were both rolling around fighting,Covey started to shiver. Whap!! I kicked him in the his stomach and he fell again , when he got back up he swung and missed. Then I punched him in his face and he was out for at least 2 minutes That gave me a lot of confidence.
  • Covey had me down on the table, well at least he thought. But he couldn’t keep me down so he called Hughes for help. Hughes was trying to tie my hands down and I gave him a hard kick in the stomach. My kick weakened both Covey and Hughes, and I won the fight. Douglass told them that was used like a brute for 6 months and was determine to be used no longer.
  • I was never again whipped by him even though I remained a slave for four years afterwards.  I had  several fights, but was never whipped. Once I gained my freedom, my mission was to help the abolitionist movement.
