  • The invasion was condemned for disregarding democracy. 
  • Suddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq, invaded Kuwait. He was a client of both Cold War powers.
  • Russia vetoed Kuwait’s request for United Nations Membership twice.
  • Russia said Kuwait was not ready to be seen as an independent state.
  • Russia also said that a 1961 treaty with Britain opened Kuwait to foreign influence.
  • Kuwait was supportive of the USSR during the Iran-Iraq War. The Soviets were a force of stability and protected Kuwait from the violence of Iran and Iraq. Kuwait proved that being pro-Soviet was beneficial. Kuwait gave the USSR a passageway into the Middle East.
