The battle only lasted a few hours, it ended in a Union victory causing the Confederacy to declare surrender in the Appomattox court house on, April 9th, 1865, ending the civil war.
Presidency of Andrew Johnson
After the war ended, President Lincoln had to create a plan to move over a million newly freed slaves to be full fledge citizens, with getting all the Southern states back into the Union, and get Southern economy from being destroyed to fully functioning.
Condition of South
On April 14th, 1865, President Lincoln was shot in Ford Theater by John Wilkes Booth. He died hours later. This being the first President to ever be assassination, the government did not know what to do they needed to find a replacement fast.
African American treatment
Andrew Johnson was Lincoln's vice president. He had the same values and plans as Lincoln had, except he did not believe in the right to vote for African Americans.
In the South the conditions were awful. People's homes were destroyed, women were left windowed, there were orphans everywhere. The southern economy was in shambles, with the lose of their crops and slaves.
Although African Americans were freed, they were still treated as slaves in the South. They were imprisoned for petty crimes, and lead to them being resorted back into being slaves and at times killed.
