english class project plot of If I should Die Before I Wake by Han Nolan
This is the inciting incident of the story. Hilary is part of a neo-Nazi group called the Aryan Warriors, and she supports their hate crimes. Hilary crashes a motorcycle and ends up in a Jewish hospital, then dreaming that she is a holocaust victim named Chana.
Chana's grandfather Zayde dies from being worked to death by the Nazis. Hilary wakes up afterwards and seems more sympathetic to Jews and her dream because Zayde is Chana's father figure, and Hilary's father died when she was young.
Chana's mother and little sister, Anya, are taken away from the ghetto by the Germans, and Chana and Bubbe are left behind. Chana is motivated by wanting to find her mother and sister.
Brad visits Hilary in the hospital, she says to herself that she wants to leave the Warriors and run away with him, only only for Brad to tell her that the neo-Nazis mean more to him than she does, and that he is going to set Hilary's hospital on fire with her inside.
Chana attempts to escape the ghetto with Bubbe by using a fake identity to find her mother and sister, but a schoolmate turns them in, leading to her and her grandmother going to jail, being interrogated, then being shipped to Auschwitz.
Hilary finds out that Chana is a real person who is in the same hospital, and Chana tells her that it is up to Hilary to continue to change the world with her new memory of the holocaust. "Use what you know to change things. You can change the world, Hilary."
