  • ThE monsters are due on maple street Theme: Don't  automatically jump to conclusions
  • It's Les! He's the monster! His car turned on.
  • I am not the monster just because my car turned on!
  • The monster!!!
  • It's just Pete!
  • I'm not the monster!
  • Only a monster would be quick to kill!
  • The main theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is to not automatically jump to conclusions, think first. Through scenes in the teleplay, there are many reasons explaining the theme. A part in the story that supports the theme is when Steve was trying to turn on his car and it didn’t work, Les attempted to turn on his car and it turned on. This made everybody assume that Les is the monster because he is the only one who’s car worked. This shows not to automatically jump to conclusions and to think first because it would make no sense for Les to be the monster. Someone even said they’ve known the Goodman’s for five years. They just assumed he was the monster without thinking, “Why would he turn the car on if he knew it would make him look like the monster?” It would make no sense for Les to frame himself like that. Another example that supports the theme is when Pete comes back and Tommy jumps to conclusions and shouts out it’s the monster. Charlie didn’t think for one second. He just grabbed the shotgun and shot Pete. Pete also should have thought and warned everybody that it was just Pete which got himself killed. This supports the theme because since Tommy and Charlie jumped to conclusions, it caused Pete to be killed. They didn’t think about the fact that Pete was supposed to come back. The last piece of evidence that supports the claim is when they started calling Charlie the monster and throwing rocks at him. This happened because of Charlie’s past actions of jumping to conclusions, it caused everybody else to jump to conclusions and say that Charlie is the monster. If everybody saw Charlie outside when the UFO came, wouldn’t you think that that is the same Charlie? They didn’t take one second to think and started throwing rocks at him. Jumping to conclusions and not thinking. In conclusion, don’t jump to conclusions without thinking first.
  • Evidence 1: Steve was trying to turn on his car, but when Les tries to turn  it on it works after  a while.  It causes everybody to turn on  Les.
  • Evidence 2: Pete walks back to tell news and Tommy shouts it's a monster so Charlie got a gun and shot him without second thought.
  • Evidence 3: After Charlie didn't think , people started calling him the monster and throwing rocks at him.
