Dear Congress, We have barely escaped from the battle in New York so, I have decided I want the army to be on the defensive side. The Continental Army will avoid large battles that might put the army at risk. Instead the war will be defensive. Sincerely, George Washington
WE'RE going to control New York!!!
Albany, New York
George Washington barely escaped from his loss at the battle of Long Island, so he had to revise his strategy to win the war. He wrote Congress telling them that he wanted to avoid battles that might put his army at risk and be defensive.
I'M SO TIRED!
KEEP UP GUYS!
Britain's strategy was to take control of New York . New England provided many supplies to the war, control over New York would cut off vital resources from other states, causing the Continental army to collapse.
Burgoyne and the British army left Canada in June 1777 with 8,000 soldiers. He planned to move his army south to Albany, New York and meet with General Howe there.
Burgoyne chose a route that wasn't an easy invasion route. The route he chose from Canada to Albany took his army 20 miles of tangled wilderness.
This forced his army to build bridges, chop down lots of trees, and lay out log roads through swamps. Burgoyne had 600 wagons, 30 of which were filled with personal baggage.
General Howe headed for the rebel's capital of Philadelphia. Howe hoped to lure Washington into another major battle.
