- Good day ka experimentista! get ready for an easy-peasy science experiment that will have you scratching your head wondering how, too! We'll be turning an ordinary egg into a rubbery-feeling bouncy-egg!
- Materials Needed: An Egg Glass or jar White Vinegar
- First step is gently and carefully place raw egg in shell in the glass or jar.Second step is fill the glass or jar with white vinegar until the egg is completely submerged .
- Third is, patience! Let the egg sit in the glass for 1 to 3 days. Observe the egg each day and ask open ended questions to your kiddo about what they're seeing, thinking is happening, etc. You'll know the egg is ready when it becomes slightly transparent. Forth is, gently remove the egg from the glass and run it under tap water, carefully removing any excess shell that may be on the egg.
- Lastly, notice how the egg now feels and looks. It feels like a bouncy ball! Drop the egg from 1 to 2 inches high off the table, release, and watch your bouncy egg bounce around! Be careful though, it can turn into messy play if the egg is dropped from too high!
- The Science Behind It: The shell of an egg is made of calcium carbonate! When the egg is placed into the vinegar, you see bubbles, which is the chemical reaction of the acid within the vinegar reacting with the calcium carbonate of the egg shell to produce carbon dioxide. You’ll also be able observe the egg getting larger as it sits in the vinegar - because some of the vinegar is getting absorbed in the egg through its semi-permeable membrane!
