Thorin's grandfather, Thror, and his father, Thrain, were thrown out of the North long ago, whereupon he and his family went to the Misty Mountains to mine for gold and other precious riches. There werer many treasures that they mined, and no dwarf was too poor to own land or lend money. The dwarves made beautiful items, and Thror became King under the Mountain. But these brilliant items were, in fact, what attracted the dragon Smaug, for dragons love to plunder gold and keep it in their hoard. However, gold up in the North was becoming more and more scarce due to the amount of dragons there, so Smaug had come South. He was an especially greedy, strong, and evil dragon. Once he landed, bells in the Dale were ringing to mark his arrival and the dwarves ran out the main gate, only to be stopped once and for all by the mighty dragon's jaws of death. Going through the Front Gate, Smaug cleared the Mountain of dwarves and settled down among his hoard of ill-earned treasure. He fed on maidens and men from the Dale, sneaking out to eat, then hurrying back to his trove. Meanwhile, Thorin and other young dwarves were weeping for the loss of their king, when Thror and Thrain came back. Later, Thorin learned that they had escaped through a Side Door that Smaug could not fit through. Thus did the dwarves lose their treasure and their countrymen in one fell swoop.
