There were two main kinds of guilds, merchant guilds, and craft guilds. There were people who made shoes and other items, but they 1st had to be an apprentice. The guild also managed the work hours and the prices for the items.

In the beginning of the middle ages, only the rich could afford trade but near the end it was popular. As it grew people could run businesses and the owners of the businesses would become rich. Most towns then got markets for food.
