While Phillip II despised Protestants, Elizabeth I supported the rebels in the Spanish Netherlands.
Because of this, Phillip planned to conquest England and sent his infamous armada in their direction
After many setbacks, the armada had finally reached the southern coast of England and were promptly bombarded by the English navy.
As the Spanish fleet dwindled, the English executed their finishing move and set eight blazing ships afloat towards the armada, forcing them to disperse and flee.
The fleet made a treacherous venture home, sailing through violent sea storms with minimal supplies left. Many ships either wrecked or were left sunken, and by the time the final surviving fleet had made it home about half of the original armada had been lost. Elizabeth proved that Phillip's armada was, in fact, not invincible.
